3M Tape vs. Wood Glue: How to Use Peel-and-Stick Craft Backing

So what is 3M tape?

3M tape allows you to peel back a nonstick layer to reveal a powerful adhesive one. Built to hold wood crafts together, this tape is strong and provides a smoother, flatter bond than liquid glue.

This is a great option to avoid liquid glue, which can often create a big mess and leave you with sticky fingers. Plus, you don’t have to guess how much you should use. I often find myself using too much glue in my crafts, leaving it squeezing out the edges!

All of our crafts at Creative Bear Den come with the option of using 3M tape backing. First, we roll out what’s needed for the size of wood board we are using. Then, we apply the sticky side down, permanently attaching it to the backside of the wood.

Voila! The other side remains protected by a layer of nonstick paper. After engraving the design for the craft, you are left with multiple layered pieces with a nonstick layer, that’s easy to peel and stick.

Let’s put the craft together!

After painting, staining, Mod Podging, or however you decide to get creative, it’s time to assemble:

Set the back layer down on a table. This piece will likely have no 3M tape on it, as it serves as your base.

Prep your pieces. Take the second layer pieces and get ready to peal off the nonstick backing. I recommend doing one piece at a time.

Position each piece carefully. NOTE that 3M tape is very sticky. Once it is placed, it may not be able to be moved.

Align and press. While you are trading a mess for precision, don’t worry, all our crafts come with a scored outline of exactly where to place the pieces. Hover the piece over the outline, align it precisely, and lower it down. (Tip: If you don’t press down hard right away, you may have a tiny bit of adjustment room.)

Secure the bond. Once you are happy with the placement, place your palm over the piece and press down firmly to ensure the adhesive fully secures to the wood.

Repeat. Continue this process for each piece, including a third layer if your craft has one.

Then you are done!

This backing option for an adherent is often preferred due to its “messfreeness.” (Yes, that is a word I just made up.) However, everyone crafts differently!
